Zone Cabling Solutions
Zone Cabling is a slightly different approach to the horizontal part of a stuctured cabling system. Until now Zone Cabling was mainly related to the idea of Open Office architectures what brings additional flexibility to the IT infrastructure. But in the meantime it is also considered as a topology that is extending it's application to other areas and holds many benefits for deployment of advanced and future technologies.
In classical cabling solutions, each outlet port installed at the work area is directly connected via a horizontal cable to a patch panel port in the floor distributor. The challenge of this classical architectur is to know from the beginning how much outlet ports are required and also to define the place where they have to be installed. Moreover, in today's office environments, a lot of users are moving or additional ones have to be added. All these Moves, Adds & Changes (MAC's), which are required over the lifetime, are rather difficult to plan from the beginning and to manage later during operation.
For this reason, the international standards like ISO/IEC, EN and EIA/TIA have defined an alternative, more flexible approach to horizontal cabling - the so-called Zone Cabling architecture.
The main difference to classical cabling architectures is, to place into the horizontal link a Consolidation Point (CP), which terminates all parallel routed cables for a definite office zone with a corresponding connector (classically a RJ45 Modular Jack in twisted pair applications). Shorter copper runs then extend from the CP to each work area in this zone - the so-called CP Transition Cable. The CP Links are are the more fixed part in the horizontal run and have to be planned with regard to quantity and performance to come up with all future user requirements of a definite zone. The CP Transition Cables are installed in correspondence to the actual demand and can be adjusted to changed requirements and locations in future. It is therefore the flexible part of the overall horizontal connection. The CP Transition Cable normally is a cable assembly, which is terminated on one side with a RJ45 Modular Plug and on the opposite site with a RJ45 Modular Jack, which is very fast placed into a corresponding floor box, faceplate or a furniture outlet.
Each CP (or group of CP's) is then installed in a way to cover a definite Zone for a number of future users in the office. One CP is limited to serving a maximum of 12 work areas and must be located in an accessible permanent location tied to the building structure. CP enclosures can be located in discreet, unobtrusive locations, such as plenum ceiling and underfloor spaces, or mounted to a wall.
